School habitat
Questions for Mrs. Sonia Cairo
  • What are the best plants to plant around a pond?
  • Are there any plants that will live through the winter?
  • What kind of birds are specifically found in Rockland County? Do they require special types of birdhouses? Where could we get recycled wood to use to build the bird houses or used birdhouses?
  • Do you know anyone who could help us re-build the pond?
  • What additional trees would do well in this area? Would Chestnut trees survive? If yes, where could we get some?
  • Where could we get some pamphlets that we could read to help us?
  • Do you know where we could borrow some garden tools….such as rakes and shovels?
  • What can we recycle from school and add to the compost pile we started?
  • How can we prevent the “Hawks” from killing the ducks that we usually have in the pond? This has been happening for the last few years.

Summary of the lecture
In order to create a sustainable environment: Ecological consencus
  • Build trails for plants. Plant trees to prevent erosion andprovide habitat and shade.
  • Plants for the courtyard need to adapt to an enclosed environment that has a lot of shade.
  • Put strings like a false ceiling to protect ducks from the hawks
  • Create a bird blind: Tall grass and weeds that cover a wall with 2 holes in order to watch birds upclose without being seen.
  • Need to create plants that produce seeds and berries to attract birds that can eat during the winter
  • What to do with water from the rain- conserving and reusing water such a a natural drainage- capturing rain water to be used for watering. How to use the water from the roof. Consider a rain garden
  • Compost: Grass clippings from lawn mowing and leaves: Accumulation for a high mass-6/8 feet long
  • Shape of the compost with slopes like a pyramid
  • Create a vegetable garden that the Summer Camp will take care of during the summer break
